PWND – Logotype Design

The final project for Typography 1 was to design a logotype using 2 or 3 letters of an acronym or our initials. I chose to do the 4-letter gaming/internet slang word PWND (see definition at the bottom of the post). I thought it would be funny to do a serious take on an outrageous word that my professor had no idea what it meant. I went through more than 120 concepts (see thumbnail sketches) before deciding on my final “visual palindrome” solution. The other images show the evolution in design and scale as I had to become more precise with my drawing while still keeping the essence and feel of the original. In case you were curious the color is Pantone 292.

PWND:
Originated as Pwned, a typo of “Owned” (O and P are next to each other on the keyboard) that gained popluarity as a joke and was later shortened to its current form. It is used to describe someone being dominated, destroyed, or humiliated, usually in an online gaming context. As in “That guy just got totally pwnd!”

Variants: Pwn3d!!1!, PwnZ0r, Pwnage, etc

P.S. It’s also funny that the day I post my visual palindrome design happens to have a palindrome date. 01-11-10 weird!
